Sharon,

I met Howard Jackson in the middle years of the '70 just after he had attained recognition as the number one fighter in the nation.  He was hobbled at that time by a knee injury that kept him out of competition for a while.  The very first thing that I noticed was how approachable and unpretentious he was.  He made you feel comfortable around him from the first moment.  He was intelligent an soft spoken and once you told him what your name was he did not forget it.  He was unperturbed by any recently gained titles and seemed to be a regular guy.

Just a bit down the road from meeting him he invited me along to one of his therapy sessions for his knee.  That's when I first saw the other side that had made him a champion.  Low key melted away and he became ferocious about getting back into shape.  He worked on that knee so hard it made me feel pain and fatigue.

We attended a lot of tournaments together while he was not participating and he was always being approached by someone that wanted to shake his hand.  No matter who it was his hand always extended and he made that person feel glad that they had came over to greet him.  He always liked being surrounded by people and the more the merrier.

During his final days he maintained that same attitude.  I dropped in the see him about a day and a half before he left us and he had a room full of visitors!  His voice was so weak you could hardly hear him but he was still accepting guest and being cordial to them.   My hats off to a real humanist and a good friend!

Sharon,

Howard was and still is one of the few people that I consider genuine, honest and great. I feel very fortunate to have known him.  He will be missed dearly.  I consider both of you good friends.

Sharon,

My condolences go out to you and your family.  I've asked the Lord above to give you the strength to get through the lost of your love one.  Howard was an exceptional person with a heart of gold.  I always remember the happy times we all shared together when you both came down for the seminar.  I clearly remember him talking about how great was the food especially the carrot cake. In the short time we shared together, I must say that it felt like I knew the both of you for many years.  I will never forget the many laughs we shared.  We just had our annual tournament and we had Howard's picture posted and gave him a moment of silence.  Please take care and be strong and always remember the happy moments.

Your Friend,

Adrian Mendez

Sharon,

I can't tell you what a pleasure it was to have met you at Bob Burbidge's memorial last year.  That's the last time I saw Howard.  He looked so good and was so positive about his life.  That's the way he lived... always positive.

When I look back on the years that I knew him, I can only smile.  Howard Jackson was a true champion in every way.  His legend will live long after his passing.  This is the way it should be.  I am blessed to have known him, and to have him call me his "FRIEND".

Hello Sharon,

Once again, my condolence goes out to you!  Howard will be dearly missed. He was a different breed of individuals. It is not too often where you meet people like him. That man was born with a purpose. He believed in himself, faced his goals and fought like his life depended on it.  As I stated on the World Black Belt site, in the short time I to known Howard, he shared enough knowledge with me to last many years to come. However, the most important lesson he taught me, was the power of attitude. That life is not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens; not by what life brings us, but by the attitude we bring to life. Howard always had a great attitude, as he always made you feel at ease, in the face of the most adverse conditions.    There's an old poem by Charles Swindoll that states,  We cannot change our past,..we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.  Thanks for the lesson Howard!

Hi Sharon

It was great to talk to you again today.  You have been such a dear friend and inspiration to all of us, including my mother.  Keep up your great strength and thank you from the bottom of my heart.  Howard has left behind a legacy in all of his achievements and inspirations for everyone that knew him.  He was a great champion and a fighter that showed all of us what life was really about!

My brother, Peter,  will fight on and the promise that he will keep for Howard of what he wished of him doing.

My best wishes to you and all of your family

Hi Sharon:
Dottie and I were so very sorry to hear of Howard’s passing. There are no words that I can think of
to comfort you. But I can certainly tell you what a lucky man Howard was. When a soldier dies in
combat, there should be a celebration of his life, for that soldier died for a higher cause. Howard
died from a disease, but fought it with the ferociousness of a marine that he was. He
passed from us not that he did not have the desire to live. He passed from us because the disease
wore him down. But like a Spartan soldier he stood his ground, bravely, holding on tenaciously to the
end. You stood by him because you loved this valiant human being who just would not give up.
Sharon, Howard is not dead. He lives on in all our minds. He lives in your spirit, and in your love.
He lives in the image of Howard Jr. So let us not grieve, but let us celebrate what Howard gave us all.
The pure image of courage.

Dearest Sharon,

I am so glad that he had you to share his life with.  We did not have a chance to meet you but my husband, my son and I had dinner with Howard in Los Angeles during the last I year or so.  Afterwards, we visited with him at his home.  He was very proud of you and talked about you a lot -- and I know why – you have a beautiful spirit – just as beautiful as the photos he showed us of you.

Thank you for contacting us about Mr. Jackson.  We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the entire Jackson family.  We like to think of passings in a positive way rather then the sad – a time to reflect and celebrate happy memories.  Our son, Bizhan Alikhaani, studied karate under Howard at his school in Encino and Sherman Oaks, California.

Howard was a very special and genuine person.  He loved people and he really loved kids!  His karate school was more like a big family and he ran it that way.  All of the kids were fond of him.  I am not sure that he fully realized the positive effect that he had on the lives of many children.

Howard loved karate and his passion was particularly demonstrated by his work and attitude with the children and they loved him for it.  He was tough when he had to be – he had his own brand of “tough love” for his young protégés.  He always encouraged them to be their best and he insisted that they not only memorize the martial arts “code of ethics” but to buckle down and try to live by them as well.

At home we often remember the “good ole” karate class days and the wonderful friends our son made and the great parents we met too.   It was a great experience and we all had a lot of fun.  Mr. Jackson, his staff, and associates provided very meaningful and memorable experiences for the kids, parents – the whole family.  We had dinner with him and his daughter, Amber, last year and had a great time reminiscing and looking at old photos.  All of the great special classes, demo events, and tournaments with wonderful people and karate greats like Chuck Norris, Bob Wall, Pat Johnson, David Krapes and many others really made the kids feel special.  And us parents got a fun “kick” (no pun intended) out of it as well.   The kids will remember those special times all of their lives.

In honor of his memory, we would like to thank Mr. Jackson as well as the wonderful associates who worked with him to help make a difference in the community by creating a positive resource and activity for our youth.  Mr. Jackson and his team had a vision and a dream to do something special  -- and they did – in the true spirit of martial arts. We need more programs like that -- with people who love what they do and really care about young people -- programs that create and build self-esteem and courage.  Indeed, no one is perfect, but Howard Jackson was a very fine specimen of a human being.  He always gave his best.

Howard was a great champion and a great person!  He will be missed.

I'm personally thankful for his opening the doors for other African American to realize kickboxing as a great sport to participate in.

I would later win two world championships.

Dear Sharon:
I heard several days ago of the loss of my friend Howard. I contacted Dennis Harris, who is a friend to
both Howard and I. Regarding the Karate tournament that Howard won in 1973. It was the first full contact
tournament using Jhoon Rhees safety equipment. The safety equipment did not work in this event, as the
foam in the gloves was hard rubber. Over 17 guys got knocked out that day. It was the year I retired from
my 214 undefeated wins in my weight  division. Mr. Mikami, Tadashy Yamashita and I, where the head
referees. Howard and his team partner Mr. Lee, "giant of a man" from Detroit, won the event. Howard and
I used to tease one another, about my retirement that year. I would tell him he was lucky I retired, and he
would tell me, I would have had my first loss to him. I remember Howard from back in the late 60's.
He trained in Detroit with a teacher named David Praim. In my mind, Howard was many things I was not.
These things where all good not bad. In Karate "HOWARD", was the finest sportsman I ever knew.
I understand Howards strength in fighting this terrible desease. He was a true Karate Warrior, who did not
know what it meant to loose. I lost my only brother to Cancer in 1990. So I can understand a loss such as
yours a little bit. But no-one can feel what you feel, only you can Sharon. Be certain of this though. You will
have Howards true friends in your corner forever. For we all know what you faced, many of us would not have
had the strength to do what you did. You shall have my respect and gratitude forever.
God bless my friend Howard and God bless you.

Dear Sharon,

I am so sorry for the loss you and Howard's family must be feeling and very sad that Howard did not have more time here on Earth.  Everyone touched by his good nature (including me) will miss him greatly.  It breaks my heart to think about all the suffering he endured in his will to survive, and you inspire me with your strength and commitment.  My faith tells me that even though Howard's body is gone now, his soul is in Heaven, and I know his spirit will live on forever in our hearts.

Hi Sharon,

Thank you for your email. O.T. called a few days ago and broke the news. We are all deeply saddened by the latest. I take comfort in the conversation we had where Howard told me he definitely believes in Christ as his savior. That truly is the only hope for all of us. I’m sure his Memorial service will be packed, he was so loved and he loved much. I want to compliment you for your tenacity and diligence in keeping him in good spirits and health, helping him to fight this battle. I can only imagine how tough it has been. We all send our love and prayers for you and the family. Let me know if you are in need of anything. God bless. See you soon.

I would see Howard on many occasions sometimes  with Chuck and always he would be extrmely welcoming on all levels, conversing , joking & being himself.  What Great memories he has left me with , I thank God that he has shown us all that there are special * angels all around us and Howard was one of them always so positive .

It was a very moving / sad day when I was called and made aware of the Great loss in the world , I spoke with Bob Wall and Robbie Knievel Branscome Richmond was with me in Daytona for Bike Week and all were so moved by this loss , Right away we all wanted to make contact with Sharon / Family & Chuck and tell him how sorry were of all the loss and hurt everyone feels .

Your passing is a loss that words cannot convey.  There are those we liked to fight, and those we liked, j
ust to be around them, how rare to have both in one person.  If there was a role model in martial arts, they
learned how to be from you. You will be in good company my brother, Frank Waller Jr, Professor Moses
Powell, and so many others that made our art come out of the shadows, and God willing, someday, this

Comments: Just heard about Howard passing. A great loss for all of us. I  exchanged emails with him
several times over the past few years, relating to his struggle and hospitalization. He fight was an
inspirationto a friend of mine who just had a heart transplant, and the  words of support from Howard
were of great help to him at that time. He will remain in our memories.

I don’t know what I should say.

I’ve known Howard for 3 years.

I spoke with him very often through email, and he helped me in bad times.

I thank him I am the person who I am.

Many people say me, why do you cry, you were only a fan.

I wasn’t only a fan. He gave me the inspiration for life and he knew me

better then I myself.

He was like a brother for me...It hurts very much.

I thank God that I had the occasion to speak with him and be his friend.

Sorry........

Dear Sharon,

I got the news from Steve Fisher.  He and I had a talked about Howard and he and I loved him like a brother.  Howard was one of the greats, in my opinion, not only as a fighter but as a person.  He was a marvelous example of what a martial arts master should be - a great fighter balanced by being a warm human being.  It was my priviledge to have been a friend of his and to have competed in the era in which he did.  My life is enriched by having been his friend.  Although I will miss him I do not mourn him.  He lives with all of us.

love,
Dan Anderson

Dear Sharon,
How sad I am right now, but how thankful I feel to have had Howard as a friend.  I am also thankful that he
had you in his life.  You were such a wonderful angel to him, giving of your love, time and care.
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and with his family.
Having known Howard for over 30 years, I can truly say his friendship was special and ... real.
His positive support and friendship has meant a lot to me throughout the years.  He was aware of
my Dad's (on-going) battle with Lymphoma and that I am my Dad's caregiver.  I felt Howard truly
understood what that meant and that his prayers were heartfelt and genuine.
I'm truly hoping all of your wonderful memories of Howard will fill your heart and replace the sadness
and difficulties of his final days.  I am lucky to have some great memories of Howard...
our Karate tournament days from way back when.... how welcomed he made me feel in Texas when
I started working on "Walker"... how he loved to be up on stage... singing... like a shining star.
Love and Respect,
Karen Sheperd

Hello Sharon,
You have my deepest sympathy. Howard is a UNIQUE SOUL. I will miss the friendship and bond we
shared.  Although, separated by space and time He is ONE of those people, that when you see him
for the first time in ten years, It is like NO time has  passed. So, it will be when I see him again.
It appears as God is bringing home some of the truly good souls.
You have been a GREAT wife to Howard. As well, as a TRUE FRIEND for those of us who care.
Not fortunate enough to be close at hand. I have looked forward to your monthly updates.
I have cherished your personal replies. Please keep in touch?!

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing away of Mr. Howard Jackson.  As with every fight he ever fought he fought with bravery, and valiance.  Mr. Jackson as all of you know became one of the greatest fighters, practitioners, and teachers of all time.  All those that knew him were touched by his friendliness, his sense of humor, and his indomitable spirit.  Those who had the privilege to fight him were always impressed with his speed and power, and whether he won or lost, in his gentlemanly ways, he truly represented all that UFAF stands for, Discipline, Integrity, Loyalty, and Respect.  He embodied the spirit of CKD.  He has great love for his family, for his mentor and instructor Mr. Chuck Norris and for the art that Mr. Norris founded.  Whenever asked to teach a class whether it be spur of the moment or with time to prepare he always did so with enthusiasm and excitement.  Mr. Jackson will be missed but he has gone on to be with loved ones passed, and with a Lord whom he loved and expressed his great devotion to. He will live in our hearts and our memories always.

Sincerely,

Ken Gallacher

Hi Sharon,

Our prayers are with you. At least Howard is at a better place with a better body.

Howard.... Thank you for helping me with my fighting over the years. I have passed your techniques along to my students and always made sure you got credit for teaching them to me. Please know that as God allows, I will continue to share your techniques with others and I will always let them know that I was blessed to learn them directly from my friend "The California Flash" Howard Jackson, a true martial arts legend.

Sharon..... Thanks again for being there for Howard. I know God has a special blessing for you.

God Bless, Reggie, Terry, Travis, and Sarah Cochran

Howard:
I know that you will never read this, But I never got to say good by, It is hard for me to talk seriously,
But I loved you like a brother, The only difference is that your relatives your stuck with, But with friends
you get to choose to love because they deserve your love, Through the years we have had Many great times,
I remember when you first went to therapy after you came back to L A.  I'll never forget the doc telling
you to do 25 leg extensions, Using 5 lbs. I remember you doing 100 lifts with 15 lbs. and remembering
how you couldn't walk for 3 day's. I remember Julio telling me when I helped train you on your off days,
that my main job was to keep you from overdoing it, and I remember that I usually failed, and that work
ethic was what made you as great as you were. I remember you Steve and Manny trying to get me to go
to the movies, and sitting on all three of you, I remember the time we sparred, And you trying to hit me with
one of your useless Korean kicks, And how happy you were when you finely did.   Your body may not be
here any more, But you'll always be in my heart.
Good By Howard, I love you.

Howard Jackson was a point fighting champion, a full-contact champion and a boxing champion. He was one of the few pioneers who was able to cross-over in different arenas and be successful in all three of them. Though he will be remembered by many as a champion, I will always remember him as my friend. Howard was a man of integrity and honesty. He expressed his strong support for the Museum because he felt it was the right thing to do. I will be forever thankful to Howard for his kindness, his inspiration, his committment and his wonderful attitude about life. The martial arts community is what Howard loved and he will be missed by all. On behalf of the Martial Arts History Museum, we send our prayers and condolences to his loved ones.

Dear Sharon,

You are most likely swamped with letters and calls of condolence from many who are grieving over the loss of your beloved husband Howard.  I'm in Colorado and just got the news from Mr. Douglas.   Just to tell you, when Mr. Douglas told us of Howard's passing he came to tears. I don't think those of us in the room had ever seen him in this state before. It was very moving and I knew they were very close.I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  I pray for Howard and you.  I know that he is in a better place and out of pain and being received by loved ones.

Know that you are loved by many and that we here in Colorado send our warmest feelings your way in hoping you'll feel our grief and love for Howard and we will never forget his coming out to work with us.  I am glad I met you too. I could tell when I met you that you're a strong woman and that God will help you through this time of loss.  You are a charming person and I know Howard will miss you.  Maybe when the time is right you should come out and get a good dose of the mountains and spend a few days to let them strengthen your spirit. They have a way of doing that.  Take care and know you're being thought of.

Love to you and your family,

Brian Mable

Howard was an example of dedication and courage to all of us. From the competitive spirit he brought to his career, to his positive and loving state of mind in his final days, he showed us how to live well, love well, and end well. He will be missed, but his legacy is the difference he made forever in the lives of those who knew him.

Howard and I go way back, to when Howard was in the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton.  I took him to his first Karate Tournament.  He got disqualified for too much contact.  We were sparring partners at Ted Mason’s Tang Soo Do School.  Howard was one of the toughest Men I ever knew.  I’m very sad to hear we’ve lost him.

Rest in Peace,

Aloha Howard,

I write this with a heavy heart and with love and thanks. When I met you on the beach at the workouts for “RAVEN”, I was told by a guy named Achilles who you were. I remembered reading about you in Black Belt magazine and how you called your style of fighting “the Train”.

There on the beach under Hawaiian skies you were friendly to all that attended and encouraged all of us to not be afraid and taught us how to perform. You were always there with a smile and greeted all of us with such warmth that we literally called you our brother. I want to thank you for being there on the set to encourage us, raising our enthusiasm, and putting your arms around us for telling us we did good work. After workouts you always said “next week, bring a friend”, then we would hang out and get pizza and in Hawaiian style, talk story. Those days will always be timeless, and memorable. Your smile, your happy and friendly voice that was instructive, uplifting, and fun and infectious.

A couple of times on the set of Raven I was performing a stunt and you were right there, in our shoes. After it wrapped you put your arms around me and said “you were good”, “that’s why you will keep working”. Those words of encouragement, stayed with me and it was those lessons you taught us that kept me working. Even before we got there you were preparing the work area for us, so that it would be safe. Whenever I am on the set today, it is your spirit and words that stay with me and keep me assured of my abilities. Not only do I thank you for this, but for your forever friendship. Even when you left, I always felt you in spirit, I was so excited when we got back in touch, and prayed to God to put his arms around you and give you the encouragement and uplifting you gave to me so many times.

Selfishly, I wish God did not need you when we got back in touch, but then you bring a friend of yours to me in Vegas to meet. Through Joe Murphy, I felt your spirit and smile and heart. My thanks to you for doing that. But I also thank God for bringing you to Hawaii and sharing his love and aloha thru you. The world has had the pleasure of having you with, now you are needed in heaven. Like the way you prepared the work area for us on the set, I can see you preparing a place in heaven for all your friends. And when we get there, you will be there greeting us with that same infectious smile, the warm hug and your open heart.

My brother Howard, thank you so much for sharing and living and being a person of “QUALITY”. I will try to continue to share the same heart you have given to me to others. Sharon is the compliment of you, she has such a warm heart like yours. I have never met your children but I know the legacy thru them and Sharon goes on.

Peace be with you my brother, until we meet again – love and aloha ke akua (GOD be with you),    Kimo Maiwela

Hi Sharon,

Thank you for e-mailing us. We are very sorry for your loss. Words cannot express the sadness we feel for this brave man. I went to the site and read more and, of course, was touched by your words. I was not in contact with Howard for many years but I am grateful that we once again got together at the dojo to see him doing what he loved most. The visit to our home also meant a lot to me. Our last get together along with Dimitri at the City of Hope was really good for the three of us. We got to reminisce and have a few laughs. I know he really enjoyed it and I am so thankful now that I got to see him one more time. Take care of yourself Sharon. Howard was fortunate to have someone as caring as you to share the good and the trying times. Deanne and I will be there for the Memorial.

Sharon,
I'm truly sorry for your loss.  As accomplished as he was and as strong as Howard was physically, I never met anyone with his big heart.  I'm glad I had a chance to visit with him when Theo came out here a few months ago.  Howard inspired me when I was nineteen. It's when he set up his first studio in Hawthorne and was recovering from his knee injury. Not only did he train me in the martial arts, but he put forth his outlook on life and spiritual goals, his commitment to friends and family and the way he always inspired you to do the right thing.

He touched us all and will be truly missed.   God bless you Howard.

Mr. Jackson.
Im writing to you because i know in my heart and soul you can still hear me. you were much more than
just a Karate instructor. you a mentor, a leader, a teacher, and above all...a great friend! I love you with
all my heart. I will trerish all the the great advise and diceplin you brought to my life. It was years and
years ago, but i still remember my first side kick, my first lap around the studio,
my first advancement to the next belt, and my very first bow, to the flag, and to my instructor, my leader,
my teacher, my friend!
God bless you Mr.Jackson!

Sharon:

Thanks for the email. I was hoping I would get some communication from you, since I had no way of
getting in touch with you. I was really sadden by Howard's death. He was truly a brother in Christ and
in the martial arts. Howard was not only a martial arts legend but more important he was a great human
being. I am glad we had a chance to see him a few months ago at Cityof Hope before his passing. I was
hoping for the best. He seemed up beat but I guess God's will always has the final say. I know his passing
will leave a gap in your life but hang on to memories of who Howard is and he will live forever in your heart.
Our prayers and love will be with you.  God bless you and the family.  Love,  Leo and Minnie Fong

It is with great sadness that I express my sorrow and remorse for the loss of Howard Jackson. What a wonderful man, and what a great example he was to black belts around the world. I had the pleasure of sitting down and having dinner with him in Honolulu, Hawaii, and I cannot tell you a better man that would treat you with more respect and courtesy than Howard Jackson did. He actually sat down at the table with us after eating, and started singing for my wife and I. I have followed Howard Jackson"s career since the early 70s. And his epic battle with Benny the jet Urquidez. Aloha from Hawaii Howard, you will be missed.

It is quite sad when a great person passes from us. I have know Master Howard Jackson since he became "Karate Player of the Year" back in the middle "70"s. His kindness and jokes always kept me laughing. Not only was he a great martial artist and competitor, Howard was one of the best men you could ever meet, let along call friend. This world will surely miss his presence, but he will remain in our hearts and minds forever.... (smile) and knowing Master jackson, he is probable setting up kickboxing seminars with the Angels in Heaven... Sempre Fi!

Hey Howard,

Just thinking about you. I know your in heaven with all the wonderful people, you finally made it to the top. I've known you for about 15 years, I'm glad you had an awesome person in Sharon. You put up a big fight as you always did. Its going to be hard to pick up the phone and you telling me, "hey what's going on big Nelly!" I've always loved you, and you definitely will not be forgotten. Boy, I know Chuck is going to miss you. But I'll be there to wish you good-bye just like a lot of us will be, It wont be easy to say goodbye, like I always use to tell you, "call me if you needed anything, call me if you wanted to talk". I miss you pal...

P.S.- I'm sorry that we'd never hang out that much, I wish we had. To say goodbye is the hardest thing to say to a legend and a friend like you...

All the best,

Big Nelly

Hi Sharon,
I'm so very sorry to hear about Howard. I had wanted to call him but knew he was too weak to talk.
It was just a few months ago that he and I planned on going to the shooting range together when
he came back to Dallas. We were going to fire my M-1 carbine. Let me know if you ever need
anything from me.

Words seldom convey the depth of loss at a time like this, the passing of a friend leaves a lifelong void.
Material things in life can be replaced, true friends are irreplaceable.
Again as your friend I offer my sympathy and condolences.

Sharon,
I was on Chuck Norris' website and just learned of Howard's passing.  I am so sorry!  Bless his heart!
He fought hard and he was such an inspiration to me and to so many other people. We know where he is now.
He is with Jesus and we have that comfort knowing that he is no longer in any pain.  He is in total peace now.
We also have the comfort of knowing we will see him again in heaven and this time for eternity.
It's so hard to lose a loved one. But one great day, we
Will be together again.
If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know!  I love you, Sharon, and I will keep you
and the family in my prayers.
May God give you strength and comfort during this very difficult time. God bless

I too met Howard in the mid 70"s and had the pleasure of seeing him again at the Master"s Martial Arts Hall of Fame in Newport Beach. Aside from being a great martial artist, Howard was a good man and anyone that knows him also loves him. Howard, the fight is over and the party has begun... Enjoy your new existence.

I met Mr Jackson while I was training at Mark Parra"s House of Champions in L.A. of the United States. He presented himself as a very friendly and humble man, and it was a pleasure to have met him while I was there in Los Angeles. Being from Detroit like Howard, as a kid I always looked up to him and followed his martial arts career eventhough I did not know him personally and he had relocated to California. Once I did become acquainted with him, I was always impressed with how humble he was in spite of his resume. For me he was a true role model. My heart goes out to the family and friends of such a great martial artist. I had the opportunity to know Howard as a friend. On New Years eve I called him and gave him my very best wishes. He was a class act and Heaven must have been in need of a strong angel. Until we meet again my friend.

I shared a hotel room with Howard after a fight in Amsterdam. He was a great gentleman and a true example of a Martial Artist, he had the humility and class we all strive for. I am very saddened by the news of his passing.

I thougt Howard was fine man and the only martial artist to fight both sides out, both hands, and both feet equally. He was nice as he could be and very loyal to Chuck Norris. He inspired Raymond McCallum and I to kickbox.

It is sad to hear that such a great martial artist and person is not with us any more. As a kid I read about this martial arts legend in the martial arts magazines. I met Howard in a banquet in Clearwater for speakers at the NAPMA World Conference 5 years ago. When he sat at our table he introduced himself yet it did not dawn on me that he was Howard Jackson. He was the nicest and a humble person. We send time together throughout the rest of the week. I’ll never forget the stories he told me. Later I found out that he was ill. I e-mailed him and kept him in prayer. He was thankful and remembered me and my family. We’ll miss him but he is in a better place today with the Lord.

For the years that I knew him Howard Jackson was a great martial artist in every sense of the word. Not only was a champion in the ring he was also always willing to share with anyone the secrets of his martial arts success. He was always willing to help. He supported the Chuck Norris KDOOA Martial Arts Extravaganzas I was blessed to help with. Howard always asked after my family and remembered their names, dreams and their challenges with true concern. I think his greatest gift was leaving you with a smile and an increase sense of self-esteem. Howard Jackson will be greatly missed.

I remember all the small, $5.00 to fight tournaments in non-descript gymnasiums, in towns I can"t remember, and the less than average hotels from the early days. Mostly, I remember Howard, the Norris group, the camaraderie, friendship that lasts, and his engaging smile. Along with that, his fierceness as a competitor, brotherhood when he won and the utter enjoyment of watching such a life. We really are all one.. Good journey, and peace to his loved ones.

I first met Howard Jackson in 1972 when Jhoon Rhee invited Mr. Norris to bring a team to Washington, DC to fight a team from JRI. We were all so impressed that Howard (who gave up reach and size to all most everyone) was such a great competitor. What we all came to learn in the years that followed was that Howard was a better person than he ever had been as a fighter. My condolences to the Jackson family and to all his friends. He was one of the good guys.

What a terrible sad day. Gina Norris called me and told me we had lost Howard. It took the wind out of my sails. I have known Howard for over 35 years. He was not only a Marine Corps Brother, but just a great close friend. Moving here to work with Chuck was a great time for me. We talked every day and got together every chance we had. He was great fun to be around. The loss of Howard hurts more than I can tell you. I truely loved the man and will miss him terribly.

I had the Greatest honor of meeting Mr.Jackson when I was 10 years old. Being the oldest of three daughters our father being one of the great Martial Arts Pioneers Sam Price of the Midwest(hutchinson,ks). We traveled the country every weekend to any tournament that my father could find.We ended up in california. At this particular tournament is where I had the privilage of meeting Mr.Jackson, my father happenining to be competing the same time as my self could not coach me.Back in those days there were hardly any women in the Art, so I always competed in the boys divisions. The next thing I knew I took a reverse punch to the solorplex, While gasping for air Mr.Jackson, in the same division as my father ,but not in the ring yet, took the time to come over and coach me saying" that you must transform your mistakes into lessons for growth."get back in there and show me what you just learned" Now I am in my 40"s and still have not forgotten his words of wisdom and I share them everyday with my students."Gaurd me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 17:8 We all will miss your words of strength and wisdom!! In Love & friendship

My condolences to Sharon and the Jackson family. Howard was a great man, a great teacher and an amazing fighter. I had the privelage of training under Mr. Jackson for 7+ years and being friends for over 15 years. To say that he was "detail-oriented" would be an understatement! He ruled the mat with the authority of a DI and the experience of a champion and a master. He cared deeply about his students inside and outside of the dojo. I had the honor of being invited to the WCL event in Las Vegas recently. Mr Norris did a beautiful and fitting tribute to Mr. Jackson and Howard"s son Jeremy performed at halftime. I know that Howard was proud. Sharon, I do not know that well, but I do know that you have been an abslolute angel. We will miss him

Bob Wall: Dear World Black Belt Members,

We have lost one of the greatest Martial Artists of all time with the untimely passing of the incomparable Howard Jackson on Tuesday March 7, 2006 at 11:00AM.

Howard was a dear, treasured friend to me and many martial artists worldwide and he will be often remembered and never forgotten.

Howard's family along with his fiance Sharon will announce a memorial for Howard in a few days to be held in Los Angeles in approximately two weeks. God Bless Sharon, his children Howard Jr., Jeromy and Amber and his grandchildren.

Love & Respect,
Bob Wall

Adam James: Everyone at World Black Belt sends their condolences to the Jackson family and we have lost a great man and a great martial artist today. God bless you Howard!

Solara Key: Mr. Wall,

I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Jackson. I kept hoping and praying some miracle cure could help him regain his health. I sent him a package of my "Solara Speaks" articles. I remember how my grandfather loved hearing from people over the 30 years he was an invalid. I hope he knew that we were thinking of him, even if he did not feel like reading them. We have lost so many wonderful human beings/martial artists. All of us kids into the martial arts will have some pretty big shoes to fill.

Lovingly,

Solara Key

Richard Tirschel: Jesus knew who he was …
those are the words that come to my mind when I think of Howard Jackson.

Howard may have started his life out fighting … fighting for a scrap of bread, for his right to be heard and for life itself. He grew up in a tumultuous time in a violent environment but as he lays at rest today he leaves for us the truth of what fighting is all about.

I don’t mean the one on one inside the ring but the one on one inside our own hearts. Howard had heart … whatever the fight, he fought it well, and knowing him has allowed us to look past the ring and carry the fight to wherever it confronts us.

Howard is the model of how to face life’s battles.

Every step of progress is a step more spiritual. The great element of battle is not born of human wisdom alone but of the heart that extends beyond the crumbling away of material elements of reason, and our battles in life lead us back to it’s original language; the final unity between man and God.

Howard knew who he was … And I thank him for it.
Duke Tirschel

Michael Miller: My prayers are going out to Mr. Jackson's family. He was a wonderful person. He treated me like I was one of his closest friends and he barely knew me. He was one of many martial arts greats who took the time to give me some excellent quotes for the martial arts book I am writing. I didn't know at the time how meaningful his quotes would really be, until now. My book will be dedicated to Mr. Jackson, in his memory.

We have lost a true legend. If there is anything I can do for anyone, don't hesitate to contact me. God bless, Mr. Jackson! Your spirit is within us!

Michael Miller

Drew Arthur: As a kid I followed every martial arts magazine I could. I followed Howard's martial career as he was a former US Marine, like Joe Lewis. I entered the Marines Corps becuase of my love for the martioial arts and beciuse of heros like Howard and Joe. I remember reading an article which described how Howard would travel 2 hours round trip by car to train. This was marine Corps spirt "Espirit de Corps". If it were not for role models such as Howard I would not have ended up as a US Marine, Police Officer, and Deputy US Marshal. But, again thank God for Howard. I am who i am today because of him, Joe Lewis, Joe Hess, etc.

I sent Howard an e-mail a few months ago. He said that when he got better and back in Texas we would meet. This did not happen, but I am sure when i pass, one of the first faces I shall surely see is that of Howard.

As a former Marine, street cop and 19 year veteran as a Federal Agent I have seen the evil in folks. I have also witnessed the absolute goodness in folks. i have pondered why do good folks get an illness which cuts there life short when there are evil serial killers, rapist, etc. who roam our planet like a prowling lion. Why do some of these folks continue to live, and good folks, good role models like Howard leave us so soon? Only God knows why things are as they are. In the time Howard was on this earth he did good. And I am glad that he is in the arms of Christ at this moment, and looking into the face of our lord, in peaceful copmfort, and feeling no pain. If there is martial arts in heaven howard will be there instructing, sharing, and smiling.

Be blessed my Marine Corps brother. Yours in the Martial Way and in Christ.

Drew "Thunder Wolf" Arthur

Justin Colatarci: I was saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Howard Jackson.

I never had the privilege to meet and talk with him but have followed his numerous career and achievements over the years.

The Martial Arts World has lost a great exponent of the arts.

My condolences and prayers go out to Mr. Jackson's family, students and friends.

I would like to thank World Black Belt.com and especially Sharon for keeping everyone informed as to the health of Mr.Jackson over these past months.

GEORGE PETROTTA: It is always a sad time when we lose a beloved friend to an illness. I know that Howard was closing his eyes to this world at the same time opening them to see our Lord Jesus, standing there and saying, "Welcome home my child."
We wish the family of Howard Jackson all of our deepest sympathies in this time of grief.
The ISA will hold a brief moment of silence in his honor on March 9, 2006 at 12:00Noon.

Glenn Hairston: I was deeply saddened upon hearing about the passing of Mr. Jackson. I did not know him personally although I felt I did after following his career for so many years. Howard Jackson will truely be missed.

My deepest sympathies to the Jackson Family.

James McMurray: Master Howard Jackson has been a friend since the middle '70's. Always strong and powerful in the ring, and just as strong and powerful outside the ring in being a great man. I shall cherish is jokes, wit and the way he always had a kind word for everyone. It saddens me that there will be people that will never have the chance to meet him and be touched by his sincerity, but for those who have had the pleasure, he will live on within our hearts and hopefully in our actions towards each other.

Luis Nuno: Dear Howard: you were in my mind these days, now I understand the reason.....

It is certainly shocking to learn that your pass thru this temporary stage called LIFE on EARTH has come to and end but it is also a deep moment to meditate the fact that now you are experiencing the absolute peace by having your soul in the absolute presence of God. May this new journey thru eternity bring you all those good things that you earned thru a life full of examples to us. You have demonstrated to be not only a Champion in the Martial Arts but a real warrior in life…
Many lesson learned from you remain among us, the last one being: live with all heart and conscience Here-Today, never procrastinate….. I regret that I was late to write you a personal note when you were so constant in my mind and prayers these very days, I sent you the last e-mail just 8 days ago… now I realize why I did not have an answer from you, …you were preparing your mind and soul for an important meeting…. With God.
Farewell my dear brother, may you enjoy the absolute eternity…

Thank you for your friendship and legacy…

Richard Morris: Dear Jackson family:

Becky and I send our love and condolences to you. You will be in our prayers. Howard has been a beloved friend of mine for more than thirty years. I will treasure the times we spent training together, sharing our dreams and goals, praying, and a lot of laughter! When Howard came to stay with my family in Fort Worth, or when I spent time with him in Los Angeles, it was like being with a brother. I ask God to bring comfort to you in the coming days and years of grief. Let me know what I can do for your family.

Gregory Satterfield: Gregory Satterfield: I will miss Howard deeply. I met Howard many years ago when he was a bouncer at a Redondo Beach club I used to attend. I didn't see him for many years after that but we met up again while he was working as a loss prevention officer for J.C. Pennys and I was a Torrance Police Officer. Howard was the type of person that was so easy to get along with and talk to. You could have known Howard for 15 minutes and you felt like you've known this man your entire life. It was an honor to have known Howard as well as having the opportunity to meet Sharron, his son's and his sister. Howard was a fighter, and he fought his illness all the way until the end. I just saw Howard a week ago Sunday and though he looked thin, he was still smiling and sporting his large moustache. Robert Temple and I prayed with Howard that afternoon. I am greatful that Howard had accepted God as his savior as I know that I will someday see Howard again in the glory of heaven. May God be with him and his family. Rest in peace now my brother.

In Loving Memory
Greg

vincent palumbo: To my fellow martial artists,

I met Mr Jackson at Mark Parra's House of Champions in Los Angeles a few years ago while I was in the U.S. on holidays.

The martial arts world has lost a true legend and an absolute gentleman too, lets never forget it either!

My condolances to the Jackson family and friends.

May Mr Howard Jackson rest in peace with our Lord up in the beautiful heavens, until we all meet again some day!

“On, on beyond, completely on beyond, on beyond to the other side, to the enlightened peace that transcends all understanding. So goes the journey of life.”

Howard,
We loved you for making life a more meaningful place for all of us.
You have blessed our days, and inspired our martial training.
Noble mentor, warm friend, your courage and caring lives on in our hearts.

Joe Corley: To Sharon and all of Howard's Family:
I was happy to have had the chance to visit with Howard 2 weeks ago. His fighter's spirit had not diminished an ounce, but even more evident was his continuing grace. How fortunate he was to have had someone with Sharon's strength and to have received back the love and prayers from so many who loved him.
All of us who had the pleasure of knowing Howard Jackson were certainly privileged. He has always been a gentle-man. His indomitable spirit in the ring, his pure grace under pressure and his unselfish sharing endeared him to so many of us. His spirit will live on, at the Battle of Atlanta, in the PKA and in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

Art Camacho: Howard was a champion in every sense of the word. He was not only a great martial artist but a true friend who, along with the other greats of his time propelled the martial arts in the United states. He left behind a legacy of greatness, kindness and humility. God Bless you Howard.

David Krapes: On Saturday the 25th of February Lillian Wall, Bob Wall and myself spent the morning with Howard Jackson and his loving and most caring lady Sharon.
Though we had been by to see Howard on so many other occasions, it was on this particular day that I realized that God had just shared a very special moment with me and I wanted to share this most memorable moment with you all.

I remember standing there in the waiting area, dressing up to see Howard and noticing just how peaceful Howard looked to me before Sharon woke him up. He started off a little slow and groggy, but like Howard has always done before, he jumped up and was ready and anxious to greet us. All I can tell you is that on that day, Bob Wall was on. You couldn’t have picked a better time for Bob to tell his jokes. Between Lillian, Sharon, Howard and myself he couldn’t have picked a better audience. Bob went right down the line and had his way with each and every one of us and Howard laughed and laughed. It was exhilarating just to be there and see how much love was in the room that day. I just wanted to say to thank you Mr. Wall for being extra great that day. I’m grateful that you made Howard smile and laugh so much. Howard, my friend, had the most beautiful smile that just stretched out across his face as he laughed and laughed. I mean it Bob, God Bless you for that. Sharon, there aren’t enough words in the world to express just how much all of us love you for being so brave and courageous, standing by Howard and loving him the way that you did. You are truly my hero. Thank you for sharing him and letting me get to know such a great man. I want his loving family to know that Howard was loved by so many people from all over the world and I thank you so much for letting us all be part of his life. Most of all I will never forget just how much God loves him, because I know God blessed him with a beautiful smile and the most beautiful heart to go along with it.

I’m gonna miss you my Brother,

David Krapes

Charles Sheffield: Dear Howard,

We're all going to miss you…..your winning ways as a great martial artist and even more so, your winning ways as a truly fine individual…..your smile of greeting whenever we saw you…..the non-assuming innocence in your straight forward manner…..the enthusiastic way in which you embraced life that radiated from that broad smile of yours and overwhelmed us all with a great and loving feeling about you, ourselves, and life in general. Although, I’m deeply saddened for your children, grandchildren, Sharon, and your friends, including me, by your passing from our lives, I’m joyful that I had the opportunity to know you and I shall always value the lessons you taught me of life and humanity. You’re a great being, Howard…..the world is a better place for your having been here..…and I have no doubt that you are off to bigger and better things.

With Great Love & Respect,
Charles Sheffield

Jeffrey Allen: I never met Howard. I have never heard a bad word about him. Our whole federation is praying for the family in their time of need.

Jose Luis Hinojosa: It is terribly sad to hear of Howard Jackson's passing. Howard and I met a few years ago during my friend Eric Lee's celebrity roast, in Los Angeles. Howard sat to my left and we talked and carried on as if we'd known each other for a long time. He was in good spirits and was very easy-going. I was especially impressed with all the positive energy he radiated not only to me, but to everyone present. Howard, keep on radiating and illuminating the sky and all the angels.

Mr. Jackson was kind enough to be a witness for my successful Guinness Book World Record attempt back on June 16th, 2004. Kinnie Gibson:

The last time I spoke with Howard was about two months ago and we had a great conversation, he was focused and was comfortable with whatever God had planned for him, but very much in a mind set of it's not over until the count gets to 10. The comforting thing is in faith we know it’s only a matter of time until we get to see him again. "singing, joking, dancing, and that big smile".

Shane Lagana: To the Jackson Family:

KC Jones: Howard Jackson a great friend, an inspiration and a brother too so many others, and me and me he will be greatly missed by all. Howard was not just a champion in the ring, he was a champion and ambassador of love and friendship too a rainbow of people around the world and not just in the Marital Arts community. Howard Jackson was Mr. Charisma, there was never a time he would not bring light and excitement into a room or where ever he was present. He would always offer you a huge smile, handshake or a hug and with a tremendous amount of energy and love. He would share this with anyone and everyone that was in his presents.

The last time I was able to visit with Howard; Bob Wall, Lillian Wall, Sharon, Dave Krapes and Howard’s sister were present. Howard had just finished a session of therapy, which I understood was extremely draining. For those of you who know Bob Wall, he always seems to have a few jokes up his sleeve. Well Howard in true champion type form perked right up, sat up in bed, laughed, and joined right in with the jokes and story telling. True to Howard Jackson form, he brought a positive spirit and energy to the room and shared it with each of us.

How our hearts do ache at the thought that we have lost a Father, Brother, Grandfather, Fiancé, a true Friend and a great Champion in Howard. It is sad that we think of our loss, but not of God’s gain. In prayer this morning the Lord spoke to my spirit … and I realized how very blessed we were that we had the pleasure of knowing Howard Jackson. He will be missed on this plan, however his spirit will be with us forever!

Go with God, may peace be with you, Howard.

See you again,

The Californian Flash was a true leader, legend, and inspiration.
He was a better friend than time...
More humble than the length of a day...
His smile and charm as smooth as wine.

Howard closed the gap in his final fight...
Victorious we know and perfectly healed in God's sight.

He knocked on Heaven's door...
God answered...come in Howard, my warrior, my son...
You are home, rest now...your job was very well done.

My heartfelt sorrow goes out to Howard's fiance, Sharon and his family. I grew up watching Howard's kick boxing & martial arts career, as he was one of my favorite martial artist. It wasn't until 25 years later were I met Howard. Three years prior to his passing, we managed to train together, exchange philosophies, and most importantly a friendship was developed that ultimately will last a lifetime. The most important lesson Howard taught me was the power of attitude. That our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens, and by the attitude we bring to life. Howard always had a great attitude, even until his final days. He will forever be a martial arts legend, a warrior, an icon, but most importantly, my hero & close personal friend. Until we meet again!

Sue Foanio: The Rose Beyond the Wall

A rose once grew where all could see
Sheltered beside a garden wall
And, as the days past swiftly by
It spread its branches, straight and tall

One day, a beam of light shone through
A crevice that had opened wide
The rose bent gently toward its warmth
Then passed beyond to the other side

Now, you who deeply feel its loss
Be comforted, the rose blooms there
It’s beauty even greater now
Nurtured by God’s own loving care.

My thoughts and prayers are with Howard's Family and Friends, God Bless.

Dear Howard,

I reached for the phone today to call you, but the I remembered, you got out of the hospital. I also thought about how great it was to get those calls from you, never knowing what state or country you were calling from. Or were you just around the corner. I’m sure this won’t be the last time this happens to me, and how many times will it happen to all the others that loved you so much.

You lost a Great Fight, but you sure as hell won all our hearts. It hurts to lose such a great friend as you.

Your brother,
Roger Rosgrant
